1, Peter Preaching at Pentecost.
Acts 2:37–39: Peter replied, “_________ and be ____________, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. “Repenting” and “being baptized” go together.
Acts 8:41: Those who ______________his message were _____________, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. “Received” and “baptized.” “Received” his message and being “baptized” go together.
2, Philip in Samaria.
Acts 8:12: But when the Samaritans _____________Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were ____________, both men and women. “Believed” and “baptized” belong together.
3, Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch.
Acts 8:35–37: Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the ____________ ____________ about Jesus… Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip ______________ him. “Good News.” and “Baptism” “Baptism” is how you obey God when you believe the “good news” about Jesus.
4, Saul in Damascus.
Acts 9:9: For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything…
Acts 9:17–19: Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was ______________, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul did not wait to be baptized. but did it immediately.
5, Peter and Cornelius.
Acts 10:44–48: Then Peter said, “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” So he ordered that they be________________ in the name of Jesus Christ. “Baptized.”
These first Gentile converts believed the gospel and received the Holy Spirit. So, all the important things have happened? Right? No, they had not been baptized in water, but Peter made sure they were baptized.
6, Lydia in Philippi.
Acts 16:14–15: The Lord opened her heart to respond to the things _____________ by Paul. And when she and her household had been ________________… “Spoken” and “baptized.”
What should happen when the word of God opens someone’s heart to the gospel? They should be baptized.
7, The Jailer in Philippi.
Acts 16:30–34: follow the whole narrative with the conjunction “and.”
Here again, we see the preaching of the word of God with the immediate result being baptism.
8, Ananias and Paul.
Acts 22:12–16: And now why are you waiting? Arise and be ____________, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. “baptized.”
Hurry Paul, now is the time to be baptized, don’t wait!
Now through these 8 narratives in Acts, what have we learned about baptism?
- There is not one example in the book of Acts of anyone being saved before being baptized.
- The scriptures are clear. People have their sins washed away as they are being baptized.
- Belief and baptism go together
- Repentance and baptism go together
- Baptism is immersion in water
- In the act of baptism, those who repent, have their sins washed away.
- Baptized, repentant believers were added to the church.
- Baptisms occurred immediately, no waiting around.
