13The conclusion, when everything has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of humans. 14For God will bring every act into judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
After searching through pleasure, wisdom, wealth, and work, and finding them all to be fleeting “vanity” (meaningless), Solomon, the Preacher, arrives at the final conclusion of life. In a world full of confusion, chaos, and vanity, these two verses provide absolute clarity and direction.
Fearing God is not a paralyzing, terrifying dread. Rather, it is a profound reverence, awe, and respect for who God is—our Creator and Sovereign Lord. It means placing Him above all else in our lives, recognizing His holiness and authority.
Oswald Chambers once wrote, “The remarkable thing about fearing God is that when you fear God, you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else”. This quote highlights that a proper, reverential fear of God removes the paralyzing fear of the world.
Respect for God must translate into action. Keeping His commandments is not just a suggestion; it is described as the “whole duty of humans”. It is the foundation of a purposeful life, anchoring us in obedience even when life feels unpredictable. True worship is obedience stemming from a heart that understands God’s worth.
Solomon concludes with a sobering truth: this life is not a random existence without consequences. God will bring every action, including every “everything which is hidden,” to judgment; this means every choice made and every word spoken. As commentator Phil Ryken noted, “The final message of Ecclesiastes is not that nothing matters in the end, but that everything matters in the end”.
In a world that often feels like it’s spinning out of control, our purpose is simple yet profound: fear God and obey Him. While we may not understand all the mysteries of life, we can trust God. He holds the future. Let us live with eternity in view, knowing that our lives are ultimately in God’s hands.
