The Father of Lies and the Children of Truth – John 8:41-47
In a heated exchange with religious leaders, Jesus poses a question that cuts through religious tradition and self-righteousness to the core of our identity: Who is your father?
The people claimed God as their Father, yet their actions revealed otherwise. They rejected Jesus, the very One sent by God, and sought to destroy Him. Jesus exposes their true spiritual lineage by pointing to their actions and their inability to hear the truth.
The religious leaders brought up the issue of parentage by insulting Jesus in John 8:41. Jesus replied by explaining their spiritual parentage – they were the spiritual children of the devil. This was evident in that their desires matched the devil’s desires: the desire to kill and deceive.
John 8:42-44 – Jesus states, “If God were your Father, you would love me.” True children of God are marked by their love for Jesus and their reception of His Word. When we reject the truth of the Gospel, we align ourselves not with God, but with the “father of lies.”
John 8:44-45 – Jesus identifies the devil as a murderer and a liar from the beginning, having no truth in him. When we prefer lies over truth, or act in ways that kill rather than bring life, we mimic our spiritual enemy.
John 8:47 – “Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God.” The ultimate litmus test is our response to Jesus. Do we recognize His voice? Do we accept His truth, even when it convicts us?
We are all imitators of our spiritual father. If we are children of God, our lives will reflect His character—truth, love, and light. If we walk in lies and malice, we are walking in a different lineage.
This week, let us ask God to search our hearts. Are we listening to the world’s deceptions, or are we listening to the voice of the Father? True freedom comes from belonging to God and walking in His truth.
