Parenting When the World Is Against You
Christian parents today face many ever-increasing challenges as they seek to raise their children according to God’s standards. It seems the world works very hard to create new evils and deceptive beliefs that contradict the teachings of Scripture. As a result, mothers and fathers who desire to honor the Lord must remain committed to biblical truth as they guide their children through an increasingly complex and problematic culture.
At the center of these difficulties is the widespread rejection of biblical authority. Modern voices encourage children and adults to determine truth for themselves rather than submit to God’s Word. Yet the Bible teaches that God’s commands are the foundation for a successful life. Parents are instructed to teach God’s truth diligently to their children (Deuteronomy 6:6–7). This requires intentional efforts that include regular Bible study, prayer, faithful attendance, and consistent conversations about spiritual matters within the home.
Another challenge is the influence of media and technology, especially social media. Children can easily encounter messages that promote ungodly attitudes, immorality, selfishness, and rebellion. Christian parents must exercise wisdom and vigilance regarding what enters their homes and minds. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” Parents must help their children develop discernment and learn to approach life through the perspective of scriptural faith and obedience.
A further challenge is maintaining biblical discipline in a culture that often misunderstands or rejects it. God calls parents to correct and train their children lovingly. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” Biblical discipline is not harshness or anger; it is loving instruction designed to lead a child toward wisdom and obedience. Consistency, patience, and godly example are essential.
Christian parents also face the challenge of modeling genuine faith. Children quickly recognize hypocrisy and will reject hollow words. Parents cannot simply teach biblical principles; they must live them. Joshua declared, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). A home marked by prayer, worship, forgiveness, and obedience provides a powerful testimony to children.
Despite these difficulties, Christian parents are not without hope. God provides wisdom through His Word and strength through His Spirit. James 1:5 promises that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask. By depending on the Lord, remaining faithful to Scripture, and demonstrating Christlike love, Christian couples can raise their children in a manner that honors God and prepares them to follow Him throughout their lives.
