Ephesians 4:1–6 presents a clear and solemn appeal for Christians to live in a manner consistent with their calling. The apostle Paul, writing as “the prisoner of the Lord,” urges believers to “walk worthy of the calling with which you were called” (v. 1). This calling is not merely an invitation to belief, but a transformation of our life into the likeness of Christ.
To walk worthy is to reflect the character of Christ in daily conduct. Paul identifies essential qualities that define this walk: “with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love” (v. 2). These are not merely outward actions, but inward dispositions shaped by a renewed heart. Humility (lowliness) counters pride, gentleness tempers strength with grace (meekness), and longsuffering endures trials and difficulties without bitterness or complaining. Together, they form a portrait of Christlike character.
Central to this passage is the call to unity: “endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (v. 3). This unity is not man-made but comes from the Spirit. In practice, unity depends on believers; therefore, we are instructed to maintain it diligently, recognizing that harmony among Christians reflects the nature of Christ Himself. Division, strife, and discord contradict the very calling we have received.
As mentioned in last week’s article, Paul reinforces this unity by listing seven foundational “ones” — “one body and one Spirit… one hope… one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all” (vv. 4–6). These declarations emphasize the shared identity and purpose of all Christians. There is no room for division when all are united under the same Lord and sustained by the same Spirit. The oneness described here reflects the perfect unity seen in Christ and calls us to mirror that unity in our relationships.
Being in the likeness of Christ, therefore, is inseparable from living in unity and humility. Christ Himself demonstrated perfect submission to the Father, unwavering patience, and sacrificial love for others. As we grow in these qualities, we increasingly reflect His image.
Like so much of God’s Word, this passage also highlights personal responsibility. The phrase “walk worthy” implies intentional, purposeful effort. Christians are not passive recipients of grace but active participants in a transformed life. Through obedience to God’s word and reliance on the Holy Spirit, we pursue a life that honors our calling.
Essentially, Ephesians 4:1–6 teaches that being in the likeness of Christ is evidenced by humility, patience, love, and a commitment to unity. The faithful’s calling is high and holy, rooted in the oneness of God and His people. To walk worthy is to live each day in a manner that reflects Christ, strengthens the person, edifies the church and preserves the unity described in God’s Word.
